Remember Flipper? Here is a documentary from the trainer of
Flipper, Richard O'Barry
and his friends at OPS (Ocean Preservation Society): "The Cove".
I thought I was going to see something like "The Big Blue" when
I saw the poster, but turned out to be quite the opposite. A must see.
In a sleepy lagoon off the coast of Japan lies a shocking secret
that a few desperate men will stop at nothing to keep hidden from
the world. In Taiji, Japan, former dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry has
come to set things right after a long search for redemption. In
the 1960s, it was O'Barry who captured and trained the 5 dolphins
who played the title character in the international television sensation
"Flipper." One fateful day, a heartbroken Barry came to realize
that these deeply sensitive, highly intelligent and self-aware creatures
must never be subjected to human captivity again. This mission has
brought him to Taiji, a town that appears to be devoted to the wonders
and mysteries of the sleek, playful dolphins and whales that swim
off their coast. But in a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by
barbed wire and "Keep Out" signs, lies a dark reality. It is here,
under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion
dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market
for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen hunt. The
nature of what they do is so chilling and the consequences are so
dangerous to human health that they will go to great lengths to
halt anyone from seeing it.
Taiji is a town located in Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture,
Japan. In Taiji, Japan, tens of thousands of dolphins are slauthered
every fall. The Cove (2009) exposes the slaughter of more than 20,000
dolphins and porpoises in Taiji, Japan every year, and how their
meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food
in Japan and other parts of Asia, often labeled as whale meat. Seeing
how the Japanese officials and people of Taiji handle the situation,
it makes me wonder if Japan has been practicing the same kind of
behaviour or attitude, ethics, etc. in the rest of of its trade
and commerce. Think twice before you buy your next Sony, Seiko,
Toshiba, Toyota, or plan your next visit to the Sea World with your
kids.

"After all, gentlemen, that's just what the fear of death is: thinking
we are wise, when we are not, since it's a claim to know, what we
don't know." Socrates, 469 BC–399 BC.

Movie: Whatever Works (2009),

Woody Allen. Brilliant. Again! Totally entertaining. Makes you want
to recommend it before you reach the end of the movie, only, and
ironically, you typically don't know many people to recommend it
to. If a collection of such people could easily be populated, the
movie would cease to make sense at all (and, it would be a better
world to live in).

"Suffering is the sole origin of consciousness ...
Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence
and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great
sadness on earth."
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, 1821-1881.
